If we are going to improve the quality of the news media, the news media needs to be held accountable to its own standards as detailed in the Society of Professional Journalists' Ethics Guidelines.
Therefore COIR members are invited to report violations of those guidelines:
You may report an error in the facts.
You may report an error in the analysis of the facts.
You may report a lack of analysis.
You may report a lack of objectivity.
Additionally, we invite members to report observations of news media manipulation by public officials. For instance, if you note the same phrase being repeated by a half dozen public officials, you can be that's the "message of the day". We should report on the SPIN in addition to NEWS REPORTS, as it is generally meant to obfuscate the truth.
Of course, COIR reports should be fair, accurate, and objective. No partisanship allowed.
